
What is PAN?
The full form of PAN is Permanent Account Number. It is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identifier number issued by the Income Tax Department of India to the taxpayers. It is a central unique database system to monitor all the financial activities and tax related transactions of an Individual or an entity including TDS (Tax Deducted at Source, TCS (Tax Collected at Source), ITR (Income Tax Return), other Tax payments, etc.
What is PAN Card?
The PAN Card is a physical representation of a Permanent Account Number. It can also be used by the Individuals as Identity Proof and Age proof for any kind of official work purpose. There are two forms of PAN Card as e-Pan Card (Electronic PAN Card) and physical Polyvinyl Chloride Card (PVC card).
Following are the particulars available in a PAN Card:
- PAN Number
- Name of an Individual or Entity
- Date of Birth of an Individual or Date of Incorporation of an Entity
- Father’s Name (in case of adult Individual only)
- Photograph (in case of adult Individual only)
- Signature (in case of adult Individual only)
What is the meaning of 10-digit alphanumeric characters in a PAN Card?
The 10-digit alphanumeric characters are the combination of a unique identifier code based on the card type issued by the Income Tax Department of India to the individual or entity.
The 10-digit PAN characters breakdown are below explained:
Example: ABCPS1234Z
- First three characters in Permanent Account Number are random alphabetic series running AAA to ZZZ
- Fourth character in Permanent Account Number is the type of PAN holder’s status or category such as (A-Association of Persons | B-Body of Individuals | C-Company | F-Firms | G-Government | H-Hindu Undivided Family | L-Local Authority | J-Artificial Judicial Person | P-Individual | T-Trust)
- Fifth character in Permanent Account Number is First letter of the PAN applicant’s Surname
- Following numeric characters are Sequential Numbers from 0001 to 9999 in Permanent Account Number
- Last character in Permanent Account Number is alphabetic check digit.

Types of PAN Card:
- Individual PAN– It is issued to any person or individual who has completed 18 years of age.
- Individual PAN (Minor)- It is issued to the individuals who are below 18 years of age.
- Firm- It is issued to the Partnership Firms or Business entities in India.
- Company– It is issued to the registered Private Limited and Public Limited Companies in India.
- HUF– It is issued to the Hindu Undivided Families of India.
- Trust– It is issued to the registered Trusts and NGOs in India.
- LLP– It is issued to the Limited Liability Partnership companies in India.
- AOP– It is issued to Association of Persons or group of people in India.
- BOI– It is issued to the Body of Individuals in India.
- Artificial Juridical Person– It is issued to the legal entities like universities, local authorities (e.g, municipalities or panchayats), statutory bodies, and others granted legal authority in India and It is totally different and outside from the above-mentioned other PAN types.
- Government Entity PAN– It is issued to the government departments and entities for Financial Operations and Budget Management facilities in India.
Types of PAN Application:
There are 3 types of PAN card applications, which are as follows:
- Form 49A – Indian citizens, including minors, NRIs, citizens located outside India, Indian companies, Indian firms and Indian BOI/ AOP who do not have a PAN card must fill out this form to get a PAN.
- Form 49AA – All foreign citizens who require a PAN must file this form.
- Changes or Corrections in existing PAN / Reprint of PAN card – People who already have a existing PAN but need to make changes or corrections in their PAN card data must apply this form. However, people who want to reprint the existing PAN card without any changes can also apply for reprint of PAN card application.
Modes of PAN Application:
- Online Mode: The applicant can apply online through NSDL or UTIITSL Portal.
- Offline Mode: The applicant can visit nearest PAN Centre or PAN Card Office for offline application.
Note:
✔ Minor PAN Card can be applied only by the Parents of the child.
✔ Minor PAN Card can be applied through both Online and Offline mode.
✔ For Online mode of Minor PAN Application, the documents to be sent to the PAN Centre of NSDL or UTIITSL via Speed Post or Courier
Basic Benefits of holding a Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card |
- It works as a Proof of Identity.
- For Income Tax Return (ITR) Filling PAN Card is required.
- To open any Bank Account PAN Card is required.
- For any loan application PAN Card is required.
- To deposit cash into a Bank Account of 50k or more than 50k, PAN Card is required.
- To open a Fixed Deposit Account amounting above Rs. 50000/- PAN Card is required.
- To get a Credit Card PAN Card is required.
- To build Credit Score or Civil Score in terms of Credit PAN Card Number is required.
- For buying and selling of Property PAN Card is required.
- PAN Card details required for insurance payment exceeding Rs. 50000 a year.
Eligibility Criteria for PAN Card Application |
- Individuals who are 18 years of age or above can apply for a PAN card
- Individuals below the age of 18 can apply for a minor’s PAN card
- Foreign Individuals who have resided in India for over 182 days in a financial year or involved in financial transactions where a PAN is required are eligible for a PAN Card. Non-resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) and Persons of India Origin (PIOs) can apply if they have an Indian passport and residential address in India.
- Registered Companies, Firms, Trusts & Societies, LLP’s, Partnership Firms operating in India can get a PAN card in the name of the organization and those are eligible for PAN Card application providing certain documents, such as a copy of a Certificate of Registration, Partnership Deed, etc., to be eligible for a PAN card.
- A Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) can get a PAN card in its name to file taxes as per taxation rule and carry out specific transactions. A HUF needs a PAN card as it has to file income tax returns separately from its members. Several documents of the HUF’s Karta are needed to apply for a PAN card.
- Charitable and Religious Trusts, Association of Persons (AOP), Artificial Juridical Persons (AJP) and Body of Individuals (BOI) are some entities that can also apply for a PAN card. Each of them has to submit its certification and registration documents to get a PAN Card.
How to apply PAN Card Online |
Basically, there are several ways to apply for a PAN Card. Following are the steps, and ways the applicant should go through-
- The applicant can apply PAN Card online through NSDL or UTIITSL Official Website.
- PAN Card can be applied through nearest Common Service Centers (CSC) anywhere in India.
- The applicant can also visit the NSDL Office, UTIITSL Office or Income Tax Office directly for the offline application and form submission.
PAN Card Online Application Step-by-Step Procedure-
NSDL PAN Online Application Steps:
- Visit the NSDL official website.
- Select the PAN Application Type as → New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A) or → New PAN – Foreign Citizen (Form 49AA) or → Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card.
- Select the Applicable Category and Title → Enter the Last Name → First Name → Middle Name (if any) → Date Of Birth/Incorporation → Email ID and Mobile Number.
- Enter Existing PAN Card number if PAN Application Type selected as Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card.
- Tick the Checkbox and Validate reCAPTCHA and click on ‘Submit’.
- After that you will receive a Token Number on your Screen & Email-Id. Click on “Continue with PAN Application Form” button.
- Now select the mode of submission of PAN card documents as per requirement:
- If you want to go with total paperless process, then you need to select the “Submit digitally through e-KYC & e-Sign (paperless)” option. In this option your Photo, KYC documents & e-Sign will be fetched from UIDAI Aadhaar data base through OTP verification.
- If you want to upload signature and photo on your own choice, then you need to select the “Submit scanned images through e-Sign” option. In this option, you need to upload you supporting documents like Proof of Identity, Proof of Address and Proof of Date of Birth in PDF form followed by Photo & Signature.
- If you want to forward your documents physically to the NSDL PAN Centre, select this option but remember in this option you will have to send your documents along with printed application form to the PAN Centre immediately after the submission of the form.
- Whether Physical PAN Card is required or not? If you want a physical Card, click on Yes Option.
- Now fill up the form as per instructions with all the required details like Personal Details, Contact Details, Representative Assessee option, AO Code, etc. (For Instructions Click here)
- Now upload documents as per requirement and instructions and click on Submit Button.
- After submitting now preview option will appear, where you need to enter First 8 digits of your Aadhaar Number and check all the filled-up details and click on proceed button.
- Now you will have to make the payment of PAN Application fees through the modes of payment. Payment can be made through Debit Card/ Credit Card, Net Banking, UPI and Demand Draft.
- After successful payment, you need to verify UIDAI Aadhaar through OTP Verification.
- After verification and successful submission an Acknowledgement slip will appear through which you can check your application status and dispatch information. It will also be sent to your email-Id.
- Now your PAN Card will be delivered within 15-20 days to your home address.
Note:
✔ If you select “Submit scanned images through e-Sign” option then Address mentioned in the form should be matched with Aadhaar Card or the document which you will be uploading as per the selection.
✔ If you select “Forward your documents physically” option then you will have to take a printout of the form, affix photograph and signature, attach the documents to the form and post them to the NADL PAN Centre immediately after the submission of the form by mentioning Acknowledgement Number on the top of the envelope along NSDL PAN Centre Address.
✔ In case of Minor PAN Application, you need to select the 3rd option only “Forward your documents physically” and Representative Assessee details should be mentioned on the form, only Father or Mother and Legal Gurdian can be a Representative Assessee in case of minor applicant.

UTIITSL PAN Online Application Steps:
- Visit the UTIITSL official website.
- Click the ‘Click to Appy’ under the “PAN Card for Indian Citizen/ NRI” tab.
- Select the “Apply for New PAN Card (Form 49A)” tab.
- Now Select the Mode of Submission of documents, Status of Applicant, PAN card mode and click the ‘Submit’ button.
- Now a Reference Number will appear on your screen, note the number for future reference and click ok.
- Now enter the required details on the form, such as Personal Details, Document Details, Contact and Parent Details, Address Details and Other Details as per instructions.
- Now upload all the required documents and submit the form.
- After submission, make the payment of PAN Application fees through Debit Card/ Credit Card, Net Banking, UPI and Demand Draft.
- On successful payment, an acknowledgment number will be displayed and the same will be sent to your email-Id also, with which you can check your application status and dispatch information.
- Now your PAN Card will be delivered within 15-20 days to your home address.
Note:
✔ If you choose the ‘Physical Mode’ option on the PAN card form then you will have to take a printout of the form, affix photograph and signature, attach the documents to the form and post them to the UTIITSL PAN Centre immediately after the submission of the form by mentioning Acknowledgement Number on the top of the envelope along UTIITSL PAN Centre Address.
✔ In case of Minor PAN Application, you will have to select the “Physical Mode” only, and Representative Assessee details should be mentioned on the form, only Father or Mother and Legal Gurdian can be a Representative Assessee in case of minor applicant.
